Parallel Universe (2019)

Collaboration with Alvin Tan, Artist/ Designer/ Co-Founder PHUNK
Alvin and myself met as Master of Fine Art students in Singapore. Some time after our graduation our paths separated: Alvin lived and worked in Singapore, myself relocated back to Switzerland.
Living and working back in Europe I experienced the first glitches which was a series of around fifty, mostly black, photos randomly and accidentally taken by my mobile phone which I carried in my pocket of my mostly black clothes. I found beauty in these real, unedited and unplanned pictures. To me it was art at its core and had as well some autobiographical parallels to my year so I decided to make these pictures part of my artwork for 2017 with the title ”Somewhere Around Here Darkness Lives”. Alvin experienced the same glitches in 2018 and 2019 while living and working on the other part of the world: Asia. For him it was the beauty of the raw, random and real, which stood out as well as the beauty of interruptions in life. Furthermore it was ‘art without meaning and destination’ and spoke for itself. There wasn’t control, so Alvin named these glitches ”Ghost in the Cell” referring to a possible ghost living possibly in his mobile phone.
After meeting again in 2019 in Singapore and wondering about the ‘why’ and the fact that we haven’t met anyone with the same glitches we decided to collaborate. Two individual, separated incidents or artworks became one. We considered this work same artistry but different times and places - that’s why there was clearly a “Parallel Universe” present.
The condition for “Parallel Universe” was to stay true to the medium as well as to the story and not to manipulate neither one or the other in any way.
There are no filters or any kind of effects. The sound is as honest as a heartbeat.
